I have a Fluke name brand battery tester and use Duracell batteries. The remote does quit using the batteries while they are still 'green' under load testing. I use the batteries until the voice remote 'quits' working when you press it sometime after the remote power says 5%. I then use the batteries in other devices without problems.
for fun, i put in some dollar store carbon-zinc standard batteries and they 'fail' much quicker and the battery checker shows the battery is marginal at that point.
