If you use the portal at home it’s like zero towards your data but if you somehow are using TV-on-the-go at home it counts on data usage. On top of all that even thou there are statement indicating using the portal does not count towards data usage while at home, I have seen a 50% increase in data usage when I test viewed shows through the portal while the portal was still optional in 7/16. Why I am concerned is I would like to stop using my TVs and just use my laptop on wireless so I can watch anywhere in my home without having to have a cable connected TV in the room while fumbling with 2 remotes just to watch. I might even be able to dump the X1 box.
You have to have at least one cable box in order to use the portal. Comcast won't let you dumped the cable portion of your package and still let you use the Xfinity TV portal. That would be ideal though. They are testing a product called StreamTV in select markets that sort of does that, but it is very little content, and from what I've heard, some problems.
If your data usage went up using the portal at home, are you 100% sure you weren't streaming TVGO content? Also, were you connected through a wired connection or wifi? If wifi, are you 100% certain you were connected to your home wifi network, and not a Xfinity wifi hotspot. Connecting to a Xfinity wifi hotspot would cause your data usage to go up as well.
“Comcast won't let you dumped the cable portion of your package and still let you use the Xfinity TV portal. That would be ideal though.” But what if I just unplug the box or turn it off? I still want the box for guest but no point in running the thing if I don’t need it or does it have to be on even if I’m away from home?
If your data usage went up using the portal at home, are you 100% sure you weren't streaming TVGO content? Yes because I did not see that red warning they put on the image when you do that. I also avoid that selection when at home and I have not used my account outside my home for at least the last 2 months.
Were you connected through a wired connection or wifi? Two of the computers were 100% wired connect and 2 were WiFi. I’m certain I was connected via my WiFi and not a Xifinity hotspot and I was not using TVGO. I have been watching my data usage and for the last five days of September it went up 8 Gigs. That does not seem bad for 5 days but I only watched about 10 hours through the portal and that makes about .8 Gigs an hour I did do an update on one computer and viewed some webpage videos but that is a very large increase for some how to vides and basic updates for the OS. I also saw an upswing in usage back in July of 50% increase when the portal was an optional choice and I was trying it out. Maybe it is not suppose to be counted against my data usage but the numbers say it is. Do you think that just the loading of the portal page is causing the increase? I shut down my computers at night and that means I have to reload the portal page every day and even more often if I use another computer. It takes so long to load.
I can't see the size of iphone updates but got several extra GB in one day after updating 5 device's iOS firmware iOS software.
