My X1 box is a Pace PR150BNM, and I'm viewing programming through a Sony PVM-1954Q Trinitron Color Video Monitor.  My box is set to 4:3 480i SD to match my monitor. I even have the Zoom function set to Full to get the picture to fill the entire screen and conform with the 4:3 safe area. At least that's what I think it does.

But when I'm viewing standard-definition programming, it's presented in letterboxed format, and the Zoom functionality has lost its purpose.

If it's in standard-definition, and I'm using a standard-definition 4:3 set, then it only makes sense that the standard-definition feed be set at 4:3 as well. Not letterboxed. Not stretched. Zoomed in to fulfill the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Ever since X1's launch, customers have been inconvenienced. If we want standard-definition 4:3 programming, then the standard-definition feed should be set to be zoomed in for 4:3 viewing; if we want the HD 16:9 programming, the separate channel for that should be kept as such. Something for everyone.

To put it simply: I require assistance with zooming in on letterboxed channels when viewing on a standard-definition 4:3 TV or monitor.

If your TV is hooked up via coax you have no adjustments (as far as I know) from your set top box. The zoom etc would work if you use the component or HDMI (HD capable) connections you would see the effect. The TV (on Coax) is getting NTSC in interlace format.

The 'curtains' are the product of the NTSC output electronics.
