I bet the problem, being how similar the set top box is to a computer, the box probably has cached copies of stuff you watch. To protect and extend the longevity of the hard drive, as you watch shows or download them, they're written to the boxes hard drive. This is where they will stay, permanently, until over written. I believe the cause, and why is so random, but permanent, is that, while the show is being "downloaded /steamed" to your hard drive, if you have connection problems, even temporarily, this effects the quality of that one video. Now...here's what I don't know....
Is your account and all of your account info saved on the device and/or a server? Are the shows torrented to increase performance for viewing? Will replacing your box fix it? I'm just guessing...
Yeah, I've had the same problem, twice. With the movie, Sling Blade, sound skipped on and off, cracking every 3 seconds. And Fargo, about halfway through the movie, the sound cuts in and out, every 20 seconds or so.
none of that is how mpeg recordings work. The recording has many streams including video, audio, SAP, ATMOS, etc., as well as timing sync signals.
If we as customers have turned on the cloud DVR the scheduled recordings are made independently of each other (in home and at Comcast's cloud DVR sites). Downloading is only from the cloud DVR and watching on mobile devices and desk/laptops is 'only' cloud DVR copies of programs.
