mpeg works in streams. The video is protected by end to end encryption using mpeg* and HDCP enforces the secure encrypted only connection by causing shut off (what you see as frozen picture) of the video stream. If the signal to the box was bad/missing the audio would not continue. to test just swap the cable while frozen and it is likely that the HDCP issue will reset and your video will again be working.
