I did look at the back of the main X1 box and there is an eSATA port on the back so I'm sure it is just a firmware flash away from being able to use an external eSATA HDD to add capacity. Maybe after Comcast looses enough customers to streaming and other competition, they will allow the external eSATA to be used. I don't keep up with all the 4K UHD talk, but with many displays being discounted for Christmas, there may be a push for 4K content and I believe the data storage required will increase so the internal HDD will not be enough.
Comcast is in process of converting streams (via QAM) for all but local channels to mpeg4 which means the space used by an HD recording will be nearly what is used now for an SD program (in mpeg2) and a UHD recording (if that is allowed) would take up the same amount of drive space approximately that HD programs currently use for recording in mpeg2. Summary: mpeg4 increases number of recordings generally possible on the hard drive.
