general info on DRM on HDMI/HDCP connected devices. The stream arrives encrypted in (probably) an mpeg4 package and the decoder will not send an HD channel if the HDMI handshake (and whitelist) fails to set up an encrypted path for the signal to transmit to the TV. This often is caused by using an unlisted/unqualified device (permanent fail) or a bad connection between the devices (temporary) usually caused by a bad/weak connection. HDCP handshakes that fail shut off the video path until one or both devices reboot/reconnect).
